Tay Bridge
from the Dundee waterside
The original Tay railway bridge across the Firth of Tay at Dundee was opening in 1878 and at just over 2 miles was the longest in the world at the time. Disaster struck the following year when the bridge collapsed in high wind and a train on the bridge at the time was lost along with all 75 people on board. A replacement bridge was opened in 1887 and is still in use today. In this etching of the a section of the current bridge seen from the Dundee waterside the bases of the piers of the first bridge are visible alongside the new bridge.
