A small part of the extensive view over the Edinburgh's New Town from the Botanic Gardens. On Calton hill, from left to right, are the dome of the observatory building, the Nelson Monument, Observatory House and, on the right the Dugald Stewart monument. The Nelson Monument, designed in the form of a telescope, is topped by a time-ball that falls at 1pm which (it's down in this etching). Along with the one o'clock cannon from the castle, the time-ball was once used by ships in the Forth to set their clocks.
