Old Man of Hoy

Old Man of Hoy

from the Orkney ferry

At 137 meters the Old Man of Hoy is one of the tallest sea stacks in the uk. Two stacks on St Kilda are higher but not as narrow as the Old Man of Hoy, which is only about 30 meters wide at its base. It is 60 meters from the main cliff from which it was separated by erosion around 1800. Erosion continues and the stack probably will not survive much longer. The etching is based on the view from the MV Hamnavoe, the Scrabster to Stromness ferry we took on a trip to Orkney in April 2026.
